Members of the SRM faculty are involved in various programs of widely recognized research, working to broaden and enrich the methods used in a range of substantive areas, from school accountability and classroom interaction and learning to biomedicine and public health. In line with this work a number of the faculty are concerned, as well, with issues involved in conducting social inquiry.
The faculty continues to receive national recognition for their work.
These honors include:
- an election to the National Academy of Education
- an Independent Scholar Award from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism
- an appointment to head the National Research Council's Board of Testing and Assessment
- a post-doctoral award from the Spencer Foundation
- a Guggenheim Fellowship
- the Grawemeyer Award in Education
- the AERA Scribner Award
- the Lazarsfeld Award of the American Evaluation Association
SRM faculty are strongly committed to teaching. Five of the nine Distinguished Teaching Awards in the Department of Education have been given to SRM faculty members:
- Kris Gutierrez (1996)
- Marvin Alkin (1998)
- Michael Seltzer, (1999)
- Noreen Webb (2002)
- Mike Rose (2004)
These awards recognized classroom teaching but also the strong attention in the SRM faculty to individual student mentoring.
