African Student Union (ASU)

ASU (African Student Union), is the "mother" organization of the other African student organizations at U.C.L.A.  Regarding Proposition 209 and diversity issues at UCLA., this group has many student-initiated programs which include:

    a)  a holistic student empowerment model which primarily focuses on peer counseling;

    b)  SHAPE, which is Students' Heightened Academic Performance through education.   It focuses on mentoring, tutoring, empowerment, leadership development, and  parent empowerment; and

    c)  Student Retention Program for students currently at UCLA

    They are focusing on the repeal of SP1 and SP2 and believe that faculty of color need to become more involved in CUARS--the Committee on Undergraduate Admissions with Relations to Schools--in order to address the "elitism" and "institutionalized racism"  which they believe the passage of  Proposition 209 has led to in the new undergraduate admissions policies at UCLA.
