Saturday, November 25th, 2006Controversy Over Marxist Educational Theory and Critique
Saturday, November 25th, 2006Enclosed is a review essay by well-known U.S. critical educator, Michael W. Apple, in which, during the course of his review, he offers a stinging critique of a group of Marxist educational scholars writing from both the U.S. and mid-Atlantic. His review essay appears in the British Journal of Sociology of Education. This is followed by an rebuttal essay, Retro Glide, written by British Marxist education scholar, Glenn Rikowski, that responds to the charges made by Michael Apple in his review essay. Rikowski has identified himself as one of the (unnamed) scholars criticized by Apple. This exchange reflects a highly charged debate within Marxism, and not only Marxist educational theory. Part of this debate involves the relationship of race and class. This debate should interest critical scholars everywhere but in particular those who are interested in Marxist theory and Critical Race Theory.
