The following is taken from a speech Castro gave at the 4th Congress of the Young Communist League on April 4, 1982. Taken from the book , Castro, Fidel. Speeches at Three Congresses. La Habana: Editora Politica, 1982.

We believe in young people...believe in young people means an attitude, believing in young people means a way of thinking.

...being a Young Communist does not entail privileges of any kind; on the contrary, it means sacrifice an ddedication.

Nobody is obliged to join the UJC; it is an absolutely free association of revolutionary youth...you must have courage to be a Young Communist...dedication...vocation...If you are a student you must be the very best student; if you are a factory worker you must be a model factory worker; you must set an example as a comrade...an example of self-sacrifice and determination, you must set an example at work, in your studies, in sports, and in your relations with other comrades.

The Young Communist must above all be a modest comrade; modesty is one of the primary virtues of a revolutionary.
