Beyond Myths: The Growth And Diversity of Asian American College Freshmen, 1971 - 2005
Oct 2007
Chang, M. J., Park, J. J., Lin, M. H., Poon, O. A., Nakanishi, D. T.
ISBN: 978-1-878477-42-2     63 pages.

The first-year student trends examined in this report help to address some common characterizations of Asian American students, particularly with respect to their educational success, that are often overstated and taken out of context. The examined trends do not support popular claims that Asian Americans are enjoying unprecedented, collective (or universal) academic success in U.S. higher education. The findings here suggest that Asian Americans still have to overcome a number of obstacles, such as levels of family income and financial aid, to earn a coveted spot in higher education. This report features data collected from the Cooperative Institutional Research Program's (CIRP) Freshman Survey. It is based on the 361,271 Asian/Asian American first-time full-time college students from 1971-2005, representing the largest compilation and analysis of data on Asian American college students ever undertaken.

Black Undergraduates from Bakke to Grutter: Freshmen Status, Trends, and Prospects, 1971-2004.
Nov 2005
Allen, W.R., Jayakumar, U.M., Griffin, K.A., Korn, W.S., & Hurtado, S.
ISBN: 1878477374     47 pages.
$15

While educational research on Black college students is extensive, very few studies can provide a farreaching overview of the characteristics of Black college students and how their profiles have changed over time. We commissioned Walter Allen, Allan Murray Cartter Professor of Higher Education, to lead this report and make use of the data archives at HERI. As we approach the 40th year of data collection on American college students,we can say we have learned a great deal about the students’ aspirations, background and preparation for college, values and attitudes, and behaviors. However, there is still much to be learned about the access and success of different types of students in different types of colleges. This report begins to fill the knowledge gap.

Degree Attainment Rates at American Colleges and Universities. Revised Edition.
Jan 2005

A National Study of Degree Attainment in America’s Colleges and Universities In this new longitudinal study, the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) used entering data from the 1994 CIRP Freshman Survey and degree completion data provided six years later by the registrars at 262 baccalaureate-granting institutions. There were three main objectives of the study: • To determine national degree completion rates by sex, race, and type of institution • To identify entering student characteristics that predict degree completion • To develop formulas that individual institutions can use to compute “expected” retention rates . Three different retention measures were used: baccalaureate completion within four years, baccalaureate completion within six years, and a third measure that counted students who were still enrolled after six years as degree completers. The report also includes several formulas that an individual institution can utilize to compute “expected” degree attainment rates for each of these three retention outcomes. One set of formulas uses information that most institutions have readily available on their entering freshman classes: high school grade point average (HSGPA), SAT/ACT composite score, race, and gender.

The 2003 Your First College Year (YFCY) Survey: Exploring the Academic and Personal Experiences of First-Year Students.
Jan 2003
Keup, J.R. & Stolzenberg, E.B.
ISBN: 1889271489     78 pages.
$30
Based on data collected from the nearly 30,000 first-year students who responded to the 2003 national administration of YFCY, this monograph explores the cognitive and affective development of students who entered college in fall 2002. Further, the authors analyze the first-year development for the almost 20,000 students who responded to both the CIRP Freshman Survey and YFCY. The first-year experience is also considered from the perspective of key populations, such as commuter and residential students. Strategies to develop effective initiatives on individual campuses are also presented.
