Accessing the Shared Server from a Macintosh Computer

This document assumes that you are using a Macintosh Computer running the Mac OS X operating system. If you are running an earlier version of the Mac OS, please contact ETU for further assistance.

The Shared server can be accessed both on and off campus using the Apple Filing Protocol (AFP). If you are connecting to the Shared server from off-campus, it may be necessary to use the BOL CISCO VPN Client before a connection can be made.

To initiate a connection to the server please follow these steps:

  • From the Mac OS X Finder menu select: Connect to Server... from the Go menu. The Connect to Server dialog will be displayed.

  • The Mac OS X Connect to Server Dialog

  • In the Server Address field, enter: shared.gseis.ucla.edu.
  • Click on the Connect button.

The computer will initiate a connection to the Shared server. If you are connecting from an ETU maintained computer, you will skip the login process as your initial login to the computer authenticates your access. If you are connecting from home, you will be prompted for your GSE&IS username and password. After entering this information into the authentication dialog, click OK. The Volume Selection dialog will appear:

    The Volume Selection Dialog

  • Select the research volume.
Note: If you connect to the "adminunits" share, select: adminunits instead.
  • Click OK.

The research volume will mount to your computer's desktop. To open it, double click on its icon from the desktop.

    The Research Finder Window

You will notice that some of the folders may have red minus signs on them. These folders are not accessible by your account.

Ejecting the Shared Server

To eject the Shared server share once you have finished using it, select its icon in the Finder and under the File menu, select Eject "research."
Note: If you connect to the "adminunits" share, select Eject "adminunits." instead.

A Note To SPSS Users

There is a bug in the way SPSS for Macintosh handles file permissions. Please look at ETU documentation Working With SPSS for Mac OS X for further assistance.

Getting Help

For questions regarding accessing the Shared server via Mac OS X, please contact ETU at (310) 825-1911 or by emailing etu@gseis.ucla.edu.
