Established in 2002 as an initiative of UCLA's Graduate School of Education & Information Studies, The Sudikoff Family Institute utilizes the popular press and other media to convey the work of GSE&IS faculty to policy makers, educators, and the general public. Selected from the GSE&IS faculty, Sudikoff Fellows enhance awareness of critical issues related to education and information studies by contributing to a variety of media that reach a lay audience, or serve the public interest in some manner. The Sudikoff Institute works as a liaison between Fellows and the greater public, providing communications support and expertise. Education Professors Patricia Gándara and Gary Orfield, co-directors of The Civil Rights Project/Proyecto Derechos Civiles, have been awarded the 2009–10 Sudikoff Fellowship. Through their work for The Civil Rights Project, Professors Gándara and Orfield are striving to change the national discourse on education equity, access and achievement. Their scholarship includes a number of studies on affirmative action, school segregation, the school dropout crisis, federal racial statistics, language policy, as well as several other issues including federal legislation such as No Child Left Behind (NCLB).
