"electronic records management matters..."

Project Goals
The overall purposes of the project are to identify a systematic mechanism for determining needs and professional requirements and then to develop and selectively implement and evaluate undergraduate and graduate curricular components for a range of stakeholders in aspects of electronic records management and preservation of digital materials.

Develop a flexible and updateable matrix that delineates the various stakeholders; identifies specific aspects of electronic records management and digital preservation in which they need profession-specific skills (e.g., database design, metadata development, information systems auditing, information policy development, authentication technologies such as digital signatures); identifies incentives such as professional licensing requirements and risk analysis; and factors in stakeholder demand for academic programs to incorporate these aspects.

Drawing upon the knowledge and outcomes developed by existing electronic records management, digital preservation, and digital libraries research as well as through stakeholder focus groups, identify core knowledge, key concepts, best practices, and relevant case studies; frame appropriate undergraduate curricular modules and training tutorials in computer science and information science, as well as curricular modules targeted at graduate education in professional areas such as law, business administration, archival science, preservation management, information policy, and digital library development.

Selectively implement, evaluate, and refine curricular modules and tutorials at UCLA.

Make recommendations based on findings for the further development and refinement of university-based education in electronic records management and preservation.

The design of all curricular modules and tutorials takes into account how they can be taught through a range of traditional and online delivery mechanisms, and how to facilitate multi-versioning of content and customization by instructors or specific institutions. All curricular components will include sample assignments and other guidance for instructors.
