the annotated web index by kids and for kids
SNAPdragon : Social Sciences : City Building
- White House
- http://www1.whitehouse.gov/WH/Welcome.html
- It has pictures and it's the president. It's colorful. It has lots of pets
and it's funny. It might be better if it had movies in it too.
Mikey, 8; Ruben, 8; Jasmeen, 8; Mo, 9; Claire,
9; Bonny, 9; Mallory, 9; Jasmine, 9: The Communications Commission of The Open School and Lorenz, Michael, Eagle, Jason, Mason, Maya, Max and Sho: The Building & Safety Commission of The Open School, Los Angeles, CA
- Bananas
- http://www.centerline.com/people/glasgow/banana.html
- We liked this site as a way of people communicating to each other. This was
a picture of a little baby eating a banana. It is cute. He said "nana"
first. We like the writing and think the boy looks like a monkey. The
picture is too long for the computer screen. Some of us think the writing is
too short. We like it because we could learn what you have in common.
Mikey, 8; Ruben, 8; Jasmeen, 8; Mo, 9; Claire,
9; Bonny, 9; Mallory, 9; Jasmine, 9: The Communications and Agricultural Commissions of The Open School, Los Angeles, CA
- Ellis Island Cookbook
- http://www.i-channel.com/ellis/food.shtml
- We like food and there's good writing. We like to cook. Some of us didn't
like the page because we don't know how to cook yet.
Archie, 8; Melinda, 9; Jennifer, 9; Ben, 9;
Bryan, 9; Ilana, 8; Carr, 9; Ji, 8: The Agricultural Commission of The Open School, Los Angeles, CA
- Envirolink
- http://envirolink.org/enviroed/students.html
- It says things that will help kids learn things that they don't know. We
like it because you get to see what not to do and what to do to help the
environment. It can be kind of boring, though, because there are a lot of
big words.
Ambar; Peter, 9; Emily, 9; Charlotte, 9;
Robert, 8; Mekre, 8; Sami, 9; Shaina, 8: The Environmental Commission of The Open School, Los Angeles, CA
- U Mich Environmental Education
- http://groundhog.sprl.umich.edu/index.html
- We like the experiments that have to do with helping the environment, and we
think other kids will like it. But it can be boring because there are lots
of words and not enough pictures.
Ambar; Peter, 9; Emily, 9; Charlotte, 9;
Robert, 8; Mekre, 8; Sami, 9; Shaina, 8: The Environmental Commission of The Open School, Los Angeles, CA
- Art Crimes
- http://www.gatech.edu/desoto/graf/index.html
- It's nice graffiti. It's beautiful and no bad words. We don't like part of
it because one person was naked. (Actually, wearing a loincloth.) We think
the site would be better if it showed more murals at schools. We recommend
it because it has a sense of humor.
Alex, Danny, Matthew, Lizzie, Katie, Solomon,
Cory, Mai: The Imagination Commission at The Open School, Los Angeles, CA
- Global Show'n'Tell
- http://www.manymedia.com/show-n-tell/
- You get to see someone else's art and ideas. It took a long time for the
pictures to download. The site could be better if the pictures had more
color. Other kids would like this site because it was really interesting.
Alex, Danny, Matthew, Lizzie, Katie, Solomon,
Cory, Mai: The Imagination Commission at The Open School, Los Angeles, CA
- Katia's Web Page
- http://andrew.triumf.ca/~katia/
- We like this page because it's colorful with kids' drawings. We can learn to
respect someone else's ideas. We don't like this page because not all the
kids in the world get to draw a picture.
Mikey, 8; Ruben, 8; Jasmeen, 8; Mo, 9; Claire,
9; Bonny, 9; Mallory, 9; Jasmine, 9; The Communications Commission of The Open School, Los Angeles, CA
- Children's Museum
- http://www.cmcc.muse.digital.ca/cmc/cmceng/cmcoleng.html
- We didn't really like this site because it didn't give us a tour of the the
museum.
Gerardo, 8; Ben, 8; Anna, 9; Jonathan, 10; Jason
NA; Lily, 9; Erin, 9: The Historical Commission of The Open School, Los Angeles, CA
- National Park Service
- http://www.nps.gov/history/thematic.html
- We liked it because there were topics to see. We did not like it because we
did not understand some of the words that were too long. They need more
pictures because then kids would also understand. We wouldn't recommend this
to kids because they won't understand it either.
Lorenz, Michael, Eagle, Jason, Mason,
Maya, Max, Sho: The Building & Safety Commission of The Open School, Los Angeles, CA
- Habitat for Humanity
- http://www.cs.umanitoba.ca/~habitat/
- We liked what they were doing to help people: building houses for the
homeless. It's cool. It's interesting to read about the bike trip and how
people felt. But it didn't have enough pictures to show us how they travel.
It's also too long.
Robie, 8; Amber, 10; Shavonne, 9; Kevin;
Julian, 10; Mark, 9; Danielle, 8; Derek, 8: The Social Services Commission at The Open School, Los Angeles, CA
- Deaf-Alert
- gopher://burrow.cl.msu.edu//11/msu/dept/deaf/Deaf_Alert
- We didn't have time to really look carefully. We like the idea of the site
because it's nice for the deaf to have their own place online. We also liked
reaading about deaf athletes. But there was too much reading.
Robie, 8; Amber, 10; Shavonne, 9; Kevin;
Julian, 10; Mark, 9; Danielle, 8; Derek, 8: The Social Services Commission at The Open School, Los Angeles, CA
- Air Force Museum Page
- http://www.am.wpafb.af.mil/museum/zone/ff1.htm
- We like the information about airplanes and we like learning about
airplanes. We didn't understand some parts though. If there were a movie
showing how an airplane lifts that would be better. We recommend it to kids,
but it really is better for older kids.
Tom, 9; Dylan, 9; Esther, 9; Allyson, 9;
Mario, 8; Ryan, 9; Jo, 9; Clay, 8: The Transportation Commission of The Open School, Los Angeles, CA
- Fun Activities for Kids 8 to 10!
- http://www.sandcastlemagic.com/a8to10.htm
- There's pretty cool stuff and it is fun. But we think there are too many
words and it makes our eyes hurt. If it had more pictures for kids it would
be better because it is almost completely boring! Maybe we'd recommend to
other kids. We're not sure.
Tom, 9; Dylan, 9; Esther, 9; Allyson, 9;
Mario, 8; Ryan, 9; Jo, 9; Clay, 8: The Transportation Commission of The Open School, Los Angeles, CA
- 54 Ways Kids Can Help the Homeless
- http://ecosys.drdr.virginia.edu/ways/VI.html
- We like this because kids should know this information and it was short and
interesting.
Robie, 8; Amber, 10; Shavonne, 9; Kevin NA;
Julian, 10; Mark, 9; Danielle, 8; Derek, 8: The Social Services Commission at The Open School, Los Angeles, CA
- Hands-on Children's Museum
- http://www.win.com/~deltapac/hocm.html
- We like that you can do things. This site has mazes. Some of the mazes are
too easy and too big for the page. It would be better if they would shrink
the mazes. We think other kids would like this site because people like mazes.
Gerardo, 8; Ben, 8; Anna, 9; Jonathan, 10; Jason
NA; Lily, 9; Erin, 9: The Historical Commission of The Open School, Los Angeles, CA
- Earth to Kids
- http://www.edf.org/Earth2Kids/z_talktous.html
- We like this site because it's cool and it is fun. Last time it got boring.
This site could be better if it had more pictures. We think other kids would
like it because they could see work by other kids.
