Degree Attainment Rates at American
Colleges and Universities
Alexander W. Astin & Leticia
Oseguera
December 2002
This publication is a major revision of a similarly-titled monograph
published by HERI in 1996. Using retention data for over 56,000 students
attending 298 baccalaureate-granting institutions which administered the CIRP
Freshman Survey in 1994, the authors examine the effect of various student and
institutional characteristics on retention. The authors also develop a method
for computing an "expected" retention rate based on entering student
characteristics, and provide formulae that individual institutions can use to
compute their own expected retention rates for comparison with their actual
rates.
