Hurtado Recipient of Mildred Garcia Award

Sylvia Hurtado received the first Mildred Garcia Award for Exemplary Scholarship, awarded to a senior scholar by the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE), Council on Ethnic Participation. Dr. Hurtado served as President of ASHE in 2004-05. The award is named after Dr. Garcia, who was a founding member of the Council to bring more diversity into the academic association. Garcia is currently president of California State University, Dominguez Hills.

CIRP Summer Institute & Diversity Research Institute

Join the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) this summer for the thirteenth annual Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) Summer Institute and the new Diversity Research Institute. Both Institutes will take place during mid-August at UCLA and will be facilitated by experts affiliated with HERI.

The CIRP Summer Institute is designed to give participants a comprehensive approach to analyzing college student data and demonstrate how data applies to their campus.

The Diversity Research Institute will provide individuals with a framework to assess institutional climate for diversity, campus diversity practices, and student outcomes.

Institutional researchers, other college personnel and scholars using CIRP surveys are invited to consider attending both Institutes. To register and learn more about the respective Institutes please click on the above links.

National Academies of Science Committee Appointment

Dr. Sylvia Hurtado, UCLA Professor and Director of the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI), has been recently appointed to serve as a member of the Committee on Underrepresented Groups and the Expansion of the Science and Engineering Workforce Pipeline.

This Committee will undertake a 12-month study mandated by Congress in the America COMPETES Act and requested initially by Senators Edward Kennedy, Barbara Mikulski, Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Patricia Murray. Sylvia attended her first Committee meeting on January 25, 2008.

Participants in the 2007 CIRP Freshman Survey can order an institution-specific presentation. This will contain the same slides as the national version, except they will only be populated with data from the institution's results. These slides are completely customizable in Powerpoint.

CIRP Freshmen Survey closing

The 2007 CIRP Freshmen Survey is now closed. No further registrations will be taken, any surveys returned to the vendor after Oct 29th will be processed, but may take several months until all late surveys are returned.

YFCY and CSS closing dates

The 2007 YFCY survey will be closing out June 1st and the 2007 CSS survey on June 30th. Please make sure that all completed surveys are returned to the address they were sent from, remmembering to include the transmital form (available on our website). Do not return any unused forms.

After you have returned the surveys please take some time to complete the On-line Administration Report Form and make sure you have mailed or faxed us a signed copy of the IRB approval form (also available on our website).
