Dear 2009 Service Learning Partner,

Thank you for agreeing to work with the IS 201 students on their library, archives or information service learning activity/project with your organization.   I have outlined my expectations at http://www.gseis.ucla.edu/faculty/chu/edc/sl-guide.  Class begins on Tuesday, March 31st.  The students will select which site they will work with and be in contact with you soon after to make an on-site visit and begin discussing with you which activity/project they would like to undertake at your site.  One or more students may select your organization, or in some years an organization is not get selected by a student.  Students may work on one project or different projects, upon mutual agreement with you.

A description of the class assignment, responsibilities and duties, and a timeline of expected deadlines are at http://www.gseis.ucla.edu/faculty/chu/edc/sl-guide.  I anticipate that there will be little disruption to your organization.  The students will need your guidance in defining the parameters of the activity/project; interacting with the staff and/or clients, and working on-site, as necessary.  The students will also be asking you to sign their timesheet to document their volunteer hours. http://www.gseis.ucla.edu/faculty/chu/edc/sl-timesheet

After the students have completed their service learning hours, please fill out the evaluation form found at: http://www.gseis.ucla.edu/faculty/chu/edc/sl-site-eval (Web form) or http://www.gseis.ucla.edu/faculty/chu/edc/sl-site-eval-WD (Word file) and return it to me by Friday, June 5th.

If you have concerns or questions about the service-learning project, please do not hesitate to contact me at cchu @ ucla.edu or (310) 206-9368, or the Reader for the class, Patrick Keilty pkeilty @ gmail.com.  I look forward to hearing about the students’ activities and hope that this service-learning project will be a mutually enriching experience.

Sincerely,
