Assignments and Class Activities

Assignments are due on dates and times as specified.  Late assignments may be accepted if prior arrangements are made with the instructor and will be penalized by a letter grade. All assignments should be typed and double-spaced.

Class Discussions:
Students are expected to attend each class session and to participate in all discussions.  In addition, teams of five students will develop pertinent discussion questions related to the general topics for each class OR service learning, beginning with April 7th.  They will be responsible for leading a 15 to 20 minute discussion on the day that they are assigned.  Any additional readings they want their classmates to read should be announced at least one week in advance.  Turn in discussion questions to the instructor and reader on the day that they are scheduled.

Service Learning:
Sign up for a service-learning assignment.  Details are provided in class and information is also found on the class website. http://www.gseis.ucla.edu/faculty/chu/edc

Journal (6 entries total based on 20 hours of service learning – Due in class: May 12th to 26th)

  • Each journal should include 5 entries on issues of ethics, diversity, power and social justice that arise during your service learning experience, Each entry (approximately 2 pages) should include a brief description of the issue (what, who, where and when), its implications for you as an information professional, and your own reflections on the issue,
  • a conclusion with your reflection of any change/transformation (collaborative, institutional, personal and professional) that has taken place as a result of service learning,
  • AND signed timesheet.

Final Paper (Due in class: June 2nd)
For your 10-page double-spaced paper, address the following:

  • Discuss the professional code of ethics/conduct/competencies (e.g., ALA, SAA, SLA, etc.) that most closely matches your own career goals and one that differs (e.g., similarities, differences, uniqueness, strengths, weaknesses, etc.).  Indicate any sources of agreement and conflict between the professional ethics that most closely matches your own career goals and your own personal ethics, and as applicable, how you might resolve the conflict(s).
  • Identify an ethical information dilemma/situation, discuss how the above professional code of ethics/conduct addresses it or not, and using an ethical decision making model, describe how you would (re)solve this ethical issue.
