Racial Origin

[Dominion Bureau of Statistics. Eighth Census of Canada 1941. Vol. 4. Cross-Classifications, Interprovincial Migration, Blind and Deaf-Mutes. Ottawa: Edmond Cloutier, C.M.G., B.A., L.Ph. Printer to the King's Most Excellent Majesty and Controller of Stationery, 1946. pp.976]

In tracing origin in the case of persons of European descent, the line is through the father. By applying this rule, those of mixed family origin are resolved with a fair degree of accuracy into their constituent elements.

For persons belonging to stocks involving difference in colour (i.e., the black, yellow and brown races) the entry was Negro, Japanese, Chinese, Hindu, Malayan, etc., respectively; orientals being thus segregated by country of origin.

In the case of children begotten of marriages between white and black, white and Chinese, etc., the entry under racial origin was Negro, Chinese, etc.

For the Canadian aborigines, the entry was Indian or Eskimo and for persons of white and Indian blood the entry was "Half-breed".

[Dominion Bureau of Statistics. Eighth Census of Canada 1941. Vol. 4. Cross-Classifications, Interprovincial Migration, Blind and Deaf-Mutes. Ottawa: Edmond Cloutier, C.M.G., B.A., L.Ph. Printer to the King's Most Excellent Majesty and Controller of Stationery, 1946. pp.976]

Every person in Canada was asked whether or not he could speak English or French, the two official languages of Canada.

It should be noted that in Tables 12, 13, 35, and 36 under the heading of "Official Language" persons indicated as speaking "English only" or "French only" may also speak other languages and have a mother tongue other than English or French; the expression in these tables meaning that of the two official languages "English only" or "French only" is spoken.

Mother tongue, (By mother tongue is meant the first language leanred in childhood if still understood by the person)

[Dominion Bureau of Statistics. Eighth Census of Canada 1941. Vol. 4. Cross-Classifications, Interprovincial Migration, Blind and Deaf-Mutes. Ottawa: Edmond Cloutier, C.M.G., B.A., L.Ph. Printer to the King's Most Excellent Majesty and Controller of Stationery, 1946. pp.976]

In addition to the official languages, the "mother tongue" of every person was ascertained. For census purposes, by "mother tongue" is meant the first language learned in childhood if still understood by the person. In censuses prior to 1941, "mother tongue" meant "the language learned in childhood and still spoken by the person". This change in definition should be kept in mind when comparisons are made with previous censuses.
