ENGLISH VERSION
Following is a list of information institutions in
Chiapas. Some of them already have well-functioning sites in the Internet, some
have out-dated and/or uninformative sites, and others have no sites as of yet.
The only institution that has thus far given permission and extended blessing
for the creation of a site is the General State Archive of Chiapas.

El Archivo Diocesano de San Cristóbal de Las Casas
http://lanic.utexas.edu/project/tavera/mexico/cristobal.html
The Archives of the Diocese of San Cristobal de Las Casas houses the oldest
documents existing in the State of Chiapas (many documents about Chiapas are in
Spain, which colonized Chiapas in the early 1500s). It is a recently
redeveloped institution, having sat unattended for 50 years or so in the 1900s.
Application of archival care is a new innovation for the mostly very-old
documents.
There are many municipal archives in Chiapas as well.

LIBRARIES
La Red Estatal de Bibliotecas Públicas de Chiapas
http://www.conaculta.gob.mx/bi.htm
The state-wide Public Library System of Chiapas is recently created (though
some of its libraries existed previously). Its headquarters is in the Jaime
Sabines Cultural Center in Tuxtla Gutierrez, across the hall from the General
Archives. While the few large urban public libraries in Chiapas seem modern,
there are also many rural public libraries which are located in areas where few
people (including the librarians) have more than a sixth grade education. The
Public Library System of Chiapas is part of the national Public Library System
of Mexico.
Bibliotecas académicas de UNACH, UNICACH, Tec de
Monterrey, etc.
http://cib.mty.itesm.mx/
Some notable academic libraries are those of UNACH, the central library of
which may have been the first modern library in Chiapas, founded in the 1980s;
UNICACH, which houses the Historical Archives of Chiapas; and Tec de Monterrey,
which offers digital access to data bases (not a common feature in Chiapas)
Biblioteca Fray Bartolomé de Las Casas
http://www.ecosur.mx/nabolom/library.html
The Fray Bartolomé de Las Casas Library specializes in anthropology and
archaeology and is housed at the Na Bolom Museum in San Cristobal de Las Casas.
It was originally the private library of the Danish archaeologist, Frans Blom.
It is currently undergoing an overhaul of its catalog.
