Making Advanced Documents (The Easy Way)

Red Bar

One of the best things about using a WYSIWYG editor like Claris Home Page is that it makes it easy to do more difficult things with HTML such as making client side image maps, making HTML tables, and making frame layouts. Let's try to make some of those.

Making images transparent

Often in your images you will have extra white space or ugly space of some color that you wish to get rid of. The gif format allows you to make one color transparent, so that the background shows through, not the original color.

  1. Double Click on an Image to bring up the object editor.
  2. Select Set where it says transparency/interlace.
  3. Touch the dropper tool to the color you wish to make invisible. It will then be grayed out in the picture.
  4. Click on the close box (top left corner) and click yes at the save prompt.

Your image should now have part of the background showing through.

Client Side Image Maps

A client side image map is a picture whose different parts act as links to other documents. Creating client side image maps from scratch is very difficult, but it's easy with Claris Home Page.

  1. Double Click on an Image to bring up the object editor.
  2. Select Edit where it says client side image map.
  3. Use the circle and rectangle tools to define a clickable area.
  4. Enter the URL of the link in the text field that pops up.
  5. Repeat steps 1-4 as necessary.
  6. Close the object editor and your map is ready to go.

That's all there is to it.

HTML Tables

HTML tables allow you to create nicely structured text as well as to include data in tabular form. In Claris Home Page, it is very easy to created complicated tables. Click on the table button in the toolbar to create a simple two by two table. Double Click on the table to bring up the object editor. You can change the number of rows or columns, make the border thicker or thinner, change the spacing between the columns and rows etc.

That's all there is to it.

Frame Layouts

Many web developers now use frame layouts to enhance their sites. A frame layout is a combination of separate HTML documents that come up together in a browser. You've seen frames if you've ever been to a site that had a navigational bar which remained the same as you went from page to page in the site. They are also used to keep logo information on each page of a site.

To create a frame layout in Claris Home Page:

  1. First create the documents that you wish to place into it.
  2. Select New Frame Layout from the File Menu.
  3. Select which documents you wish to have in your layout and click OK.
  4. Now you can resize the frames by dragging them around the screen.
  5. You can also subdivide frames by using the new frame buttons in the toolbar.
  6. Double Click on each of the frames to give it a name.
  7. Under Document Options, under Advanced options, set the Default Target Name to the name of one of your frames.
  8. Save your document.

When you open your document in Netscape, you should see both documents in the frame layout coming up on the screen.

Please note: You should be careful when creating frame based documents. They do not work on versions of Netscape prior to 3.0. There is also somewhat of a backlash against using frames in the internet community at large. If you really want to make frame layout easy, use Claris Home Page 3.0, Netscape Composer, or Adobe Page Mill. Those programs allow you to see the contents of each frame without opening an internet browser.
