Hastert, in Reversal, Backs Extension for 9/11 Panel
this is a very bizarre story, as Repub House leadership goes forth and back on extension of 9/11 panel; its report is potentially explosive for the Bush administration and there is obviously a faction of the gang that wants to block and curtail all investigation, yet after saying in no way would there be an extension the house leader now is extending it; wouldn't it be nice to be the fly on the wall on this one?

British govt drops charges against whistleblower who exposed US/UK spy operation at UN before Iraq invasion; BBC suggested that one of the reasons the case was dropped was that it would be highly embarassing for Bush and Blair administration if case proceeded; not only would the case blow open an embarassing spy operation but the dubious legality of the war [an issue in UK but not apparently the US]

www.AndrewSullivan.com - Daily Dish breaks with Bush
I've never posted anything by Andrew Sullivan or said anything positive about him as he's been one of the fiercist defenders of the Bush administration; it is heartening, however, to see his ferocious critique of Bush's attack on gay and lesbians, his breaking with Bush, and declaring total war on the Bush administration; if enough conservatives and former supporters break with Bush on this or that issue he's finished; obviously, a lot of people are deeply offended by yesterday's assault on gay and lesbian rights, as they should be, under the guise of blather about the sanctity of marriage and outrageous demand for a constitutional amendment, that most intelligent commentators see as merely a political ploy for a wedge issue, one, however, that could lose Bush a lot of support

washingtonpost.com: The Culture War President
Bush declares War on Gays and Lesbians, revealing once again his hardright activism and that "compassionate" conservative is a joke; once again, he is a divider and not a uniter; his promotion of hysteria and war on the issue of gay marriage could provide an election wedge or could seriously offend serious people for whom it is a distraction from the real issues and problems facing the country; Bush is undeniably bold but so were Hitler and Mussolini

Blogs Pump Bucks Into Campaigns
Story location: http://www.wired.com/news/politics/0,1283,62325,00.html
Not even his own staff would call Democratic congressional candidate Ben Chandler a nethead.
"He uses the Internet almost exclusively for fantasy baseball," said campaign spokesman Jason Sauer, who added that he wasn't sure whether, until recently, Chandler even knew what a blog was.
But that was before Chandler's campaign turned a $2,000 investment in blog advertising into over $80,000 in donations in only two weeks. Chandler -- who won a seat in the House of Representatives Tuesday evening -- definitely knows what a blog is now, Sauer said. "It's that thing that brings in money."
Political blog advertising represents the latest twist on the Internet fund-raising strategy pioneered by the campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean, which raised millions of grass-roots dollars from its Blog for America website. Chandler's campaign is the first of several that have started advertising on political blogs as a cost-effective way to reach a national audience.
But even as campaigns queue up to place ads on the most popular sites, and political bloggers seem poised to reap an election-year windfall, some warn that politicians should not expect blog ads to translate automatically into dollars.
The key is to make readers feel they have a stake in the race, said Markos Moulitsas Zuniga, publisher of the popular Democratic activists' blog Daily Kos and one of Chandler's most visible online backers. (Moulitsas is married to Wired News staff reporter Elisa Batista.)
"What I fear is that candidates will see blog readers as ATM machines," he said.

Follow the Network
Conservative David Horowitz is apparently behind a new web project that is posing as a definitive archive of leftist analysis -- exposing the deep conspiratorial nature of the left -- Follow the Network (the search function didn't work for me at the mirror site but everything else did).
What's especially alarming about this future site in progress is that it will have a quasi-wiki functionality of everyone being able to nominate leftists for watching and contributing information -- including people's home address and telephone numbers.
Anyhow, people seem to be having a good laugh about this so far -- about who is listed and who isn't. But it may not be so funny a year from now. We'll see. What do you think?

Maureen Dowd has another especially hardhitting commentary on how Iraq crook Ahmad Chalabi conned the Bush neo-cons into thinking that Iraq was a sea of weapons of WMD that would be a cakewalk to take over and easily yield its bountiful oil prizes and contracts for reconstruction; this issue has not received adequate media focus and perhaps Kerry and the Dems should take this up

You Can Make It With Plato
Saletan is far too generous with Bush describing him at "Platonic" after his interview with Fat Tim Russert: a better description would be mendacious, banal, out of touch with reality and living in a subjective world of self-certainty and delusion. Bush's interview also revealed what C. Wright Mills called "crackpot realism," where claims that one has a realistic view of the world veils extremist ideology. Hopefully, Bush's delusions and lies will be increasingly transparent and he can go to Crawford Texas for retirement

Op-Ed Columnist: Purity of the Powells; and DK on obscenity
The hypocritical Powells are in the news this week and Maureen is after them. Powell Jr. is making noises about the obscenity of Janet Jackson showing her breast during the Superbowl halftime, while Powell Daddy is defending Iraq despite the lack of WMD, using moral reasons. Both are immoral hypocrites, Jr. for enabling mass media deregulation and Sr. for enabling a monstrous Iraq war. Interestingly, Monday I got a call from King Productions, that I think works for Fox, asking me about my opinion as a media and cultural critic of Janet Jackson baring her breast. "Weren't you surprised?" I was asked. I answered, "No, the logic of the spectacle is such that entertainment will constantly go over the edge to get eyeballs and publicity, that Janet Jackson needed the publicity, that MTV likes to go over the edge, so this was totally understandable. "But," the media dude stammered, "wasn't this obscene." Maybe, I answered but not as obscene as Michael Powell's media deregulation while accepting trips and goodies from the media industry and certainly not as obscene as Dick Cheney and Halliburton. This was not the answer they were looking for so I lost my chance to do a moralistic denunciation of Janet Jackson, MTV, and CBS. Sorry, but there are much bigger fish to fry and targets to denounce

Giving in to the uproar over bad intelligence, Bush agrees to independent commission on Iraq invasion
Dana Milbank
… Bush will announce this week that he is creating, by executive order, a bipartisan independent panel of at least nine members that will make a report in 2005, the White House confirmed yesterday. But those close to the president say he is doing so while continuing to avoid any explicit public acknowledgment that the intelligence was wrong. Why the reluctance to state what appears increasingly obvious as Kay spent the past 10 days dashing prospects that significant weapons stockpiles would be found in Iraq? Although the tactic may appear to be obtuse, there is a real strategy behind the Bush response -- and one that has been used before, to great effect….
David Sanger
… The draft of the executive order specifically orders the commission to compare intelligence about Iraq with what was found on the ground there. But it is not clear whether the commission will decide to delve into issues beyond how the intelligence was gathered, and specifically how it was used. In the case of Iraq, that could put the commission into the midst of the politically charged question of whether the most dire-sounding possibilities were de-emphasized by Bush administration officials to build a national and international consensus on the need to take military action. The White House has denied any such effort to filter the intelligence….
