Textbook
Kirk, Roger E. (1998) Experimental Design: Procedures for the Behavioral Sciences,
Third Edition. Monterey, California: Brooks/ColePublishing. ISBN 0-534-25092-0
Course Focus
- Classical analysis of variance (ANOVA).
- The regression approach using orthogonal coding for ANOVA.
- Using Stata in analysis of variance.
Course Difficulty
Assignments, Quizes and Tests
- Four assignments
- Two to four quizes -- equal to one assignment
- Final exam -- equal to two assignments
- All assignments, quizes and tests are combined to come up with
a final grade in the course.
Handy Hints
- Keep up with classwork, don't fall behind.
- Work problems and examples in the book.
- Work with other students.
- Read sections more than once.
- Don't worry. Be happy.

Statistics Software
Stata will be used for all class examples. Stata datasets will be available over the Internet.
Datasets for the assignments
will also be available in ASCII format for individuals who are not using Stata.
All the procedures and techniques needed for the 230C assignments are available in Stata.
Stata is available in the computer lab in Moore Hall and many other places on campus.
It is also possible to do all of the assignments using SAS, although SAS
has a much steeper learning curve than Stata. SPSS is a distant third choice.
I am not familiar with anova and ancova in SPSS and will not be able to assist
students using SPSS for their assignments.
GSE&IS Computer Labs
- Moore Hall 3120
- GSE&IS 118
Other Computing Options
- Departmental Computing Labs in your home department
- Macs & PCs at OAC, & Powell Library
Computer Account
- To use the computer labs in Moore Hall or GSE&IS, students must have a computer account.
- NonGSE&IS students will be issued visitor accounts, good for one quarter.
