CIDE is a research
and action center whose mission is to provide quality
information on a variety of issues related to
international and development education. We accomplish
this through a series of publications, research
programs, practical initiatives, and networks with
existing development and academic institutions. CIDE
acts as a hub for researchers and organizations to
network with and learn about critical issues in
international and development education from a wide
range of fields and disciplines.
CIDE unites, informs, and empowers individuals, groups,
and organizations that are working together to
understand the key issues related to international and
development education.
CIDE seeks to form action research partnerships.
Currently three such partnerships are operational. The
first is with the University of California, Office of
the President’s Office of International Academic
Activities and Education Abroad Program focusing on
“Dynamics of Change and Strategic Directions in Global
Higher Education.” The second is with California based
NGO Relief International currently focused on assisting
in the restructuring of higher education in Afghanistan.
Teacher Education Reform in Ethiopia is the third CIDE
partnership, with USAID, the Ethiopia Ministry of
Education, and five other US universities. The program
is concerned to support recent educational policy
directions through (1) the various initiatives of BESO-II
which focuses primarily on the infrastructure
development of TTIs and TTCs, (2) cooperation with
UNESCO in a distance education program to enhance the
capacity of teacher educators, (3) linkages with various
universities to strengthen both the capacity of teacher
educators and of the institutional setting where they
work, and (4) other means.

available information from other organizations, from
educational institutions, and from the field that aid in
our efforts to understand educational change and
development.
Education: We provide resources and expertise to
education researchers and practitioners that include a

conferences, and access to content experts.
Facilitation: CIDE acts as a network headquarters
by facilitating interaction between development minded
individuals, academics, organizations and projects.

CIDE will carry out the following
activities:
- Establish a higher education reform research
function jointly with UCEAP to study and map higher
educational reform in the US and abroad. CIDE partners
with EAP, which maximizes the Center’s strengths and
builds on a foundation of collective synergy.
- Provide a home for the Comparative Education
Review and other potential publications.
- Hold an annual Speaker Series where invited
speakers will come to UCLA each quarter to address
faculty and students in an informal setting on a topic
that is at the cutting edge and of international
concern.
- Organize a quarterly Colloquium Series on various
topics of international concern for advanced graduate
students and faculty.
- Continue our work in comparative higher education
reform and exchanges.
- Develop and maintain a quarterly CIDE Newsletter
that would be on the web and circulated through hard
copy to our colleagues and institutions in the US and
abroad to inform them of the work of GSEIS on
international topics.
- Co-sponsor other international activities as
appropriate with our colleagues in the GSEIS and
across campus.
- Establish a network of international and
development educators, faculty, professionals,
researchers, practitioners, and organizations.
- Serve as an infrastructure to seek extramural
funds for research and development activities on
international topics.
