Ways to Attract More Students

Gainesville College in Georgia administered a 1998 Needs Assessment Survey to local community leaders and high school administrators in order to understand the perceptions and attitudes about the college. The gathered information was used by decision-makers across campus for improving the college's offerings and services. One set of suggestions addressed what the college can do to improve its attractiveness to prospective students:

Highlight current students at the college in the media

Create more on-campus programs for sophomore and junior students in high school

Send the faculty into area high schools as guest lecturers

Improve the library

Provide visits to the campus for high school counselors to learn more about the college

Emphasize teacher education programs

Create more of a collegiate atmosphere to counteract local students's perception that college is just an extension of high school

Provide orientation programs for new students

Intensify on-campus recruitment in nearby area high schools

Mail information about the college directly to local high school juniors and their parents

Provide a periodic newsletter to high school guidance counselors

Add more up-to-date fitness equipment in the gym

Establish a competitive intercollegiate sports program for both men and women

Provide more tutoring services for night students

Maintain an attractive campus
