Administrative Perspectives on Community College Leadership

Academic administration has been characterized as one of the most stressful occupations in the United States. A synthesis of research and literature on administrative leadership identifies some critical findings that offer guidance about leadership development on community college campuses:

Strong interpersonal skills, the one transcending attribute of leadership, should be cultivated among faculty, staff, and administrators;
Junior faculty and mid-level administrators should be purposefully identified, recruited, and trained to maintain self-sustaining leadership;
Opportunities should be made available for faculty and staff to engage in decision making processes;
Administrative and professional support of college leaders should be a top priority in times of institutional change; and
Institutional research related to effective leadership on campus should be conducted and disseminated to foster leadership development.
