What Manufacturers Want From Community Colleges

One responsibility placed on community colleges is that of providing school-to-work training and re-training of displaced workers. The following is a wish list from the manufacturing employer's perspective:

Quality: Offer frequently updated courses that are relevant to industry needs.
Keep Promises: Courses must deliver exactly what they promise.
Customize: Offer more off-the-shelf programs that target specific industry needs.
Strategizing: Offer courses that help small companies design strategic and workforce plans.
On-site Training: Take on-the-job training programs directly to the workplace.
Credit Courses: Offer more credit courses as part of workforce training plans.
Flexibility: Be more flexible about where and how educational services are provided.
Innovate: Offer more train-the-trainer courses and teaching internships for company trainers.
Coordinate: Be a nexus between companies, consultants, employer groups, and other groups.
Promotion: Advocate among students for the manufacturing industry and the jobs they offer.
