Four Year and Community College Cooperative Arrangements

EDINFO Number 97-8

From the ERIC Clearinghouse for Community Colleges

Cooperation between two-year and four-year colleges can offer new ways to maximize enrollment and revenues while ensuring educational quality. The following guidelines have been found useful in establishing, expanding, and improving cooperative arrangements, especially articulation agreements:

  1. Provide leadership and commitment from the top;
  2. Involve faculty early in the articulation process;
  3. Build cooperative relationships on a foundation of respect and trust;
  4. Ensure that all parties benefit from participation in a cooperative effort;
  5. State clearly who is responsible for implementing agreements, and put all agreements in writing;
  6. Maintain open, frequent, and clear communication;
  7. Begin by establishing agreements about individual courses, and build on those to develop cooperative programs or degrees;
  8. Focus on the goals of the cooperative agreement, not on issues of control.
