Crime at Community Colleges

EDINFO Number 97-7

From the ERIC Clearinghouse for Community Colleges

Crime is a major concern on many college campuses. In an effort to better understand the nature and extent of crime at higher education institutions, Congress passed the Student Right to Know and Campus Security Act in 1990. Title II of the act requires higher education institutions receiving student aid funds to report their campus crime statistics. The following are the number of crimes per 1,000 students reported for 276 public two-year colleges:

Type of Crime 1992 1993 1994
Murder .000 .001 .000
Aggravated Assault .164 .162 .129
Forcible Sex Offenses .013 .011 .014
Nonforcible Sex Offenses .040 .038 .062
Robbery .063 .080 .089
Burglary .817 .783 .786
Motor Vehicle Theft .317 .319 .325
Liquor Law Violations .307 .291 .339
Drug Abuse Violations .073 .107 .091
Weapons Possessions .054 .051 .058

Property crimes are the most common, with burglary appearing as the most frequently reported violation, and motor vehicle theft also appearing in the top three. Crimes against persons, such as assault, robbery, and sexual offenses were substantially less frequent.
