FACILITATING ARTICULATION IN COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Assisting students to transfer is one of community colleges' prime emphases. Articulation between community colleges and four-year institutions is one way to facilitate this. However, to ensure a smooth transition for students, many steps may need to be taken at the institutional level. The following are some key components in that process:

Hold joint faculty meetings to ensure that courses are complementary and will transfer;

Create a joint transfer council with equal representation from each institution;

Familiarize two-year college students with the physical, social, and academic environment of the four-year college to ease the transition;

Establish a transfer center to assist in identifying instructional and emotional problems that could upset the transfer process;

Promote communication between the service and support staff at both institutions;

Establish a task-force to oversee the process, facilitate interaction, and collect information about the progress of students who have transferred;

Create tuition agreements so that community college students can attend classes at four- year colleges without an increase in fees.
