INSTITUTIONALIZING TECHNOLOGY

Many community college leaders are seeking ways to fully integrate technology into their colleges. Through her experiences with this process at Miami-Dade Community College, Kamala Anandam has constructed a list of practices designed to help administrators meet the challenges of institutionalizing technology. The following are highlights of her work:

• Clearly connect the need for implementation of technology to the achievement of institutional goals,

• Create a human infrastructure to facilitate planning, implementation, evaluation, and communication,

• Consider employee participation in implementation and use of technology when setting promotional and award criteria,

• Hire individuals for planning and budget officers who can secure ongoing external funding to specifically meet the institution's technological needs,

• Conduct cost-effectiveness studies to ensure that technology will meet expressed needs and not be simply a wasteful "add-on,"

• Ensure that adequate financial resources are allocated to training and technical support so that personnel can make use of the technology when it becomes available.
