NATIONAL TRANSFER DATA--1990 UPDATE

ERIC Clearinghouse for Community Colleges
EDINFO Number 97-1, November 1996

The Center for the Study of Community Colleges (CSCC) traces the rate of transfer from two- to four-year colleges and universities across the nation. The transfer rate is determined by dividing the number of students entering the community college in a given year who have no prior college experience and who complete at least 12 college-credit units into the number of that group who take one or more classes at the university level within four years. Currently 416 colleges participate in the Transfer Assembly, and they represent all or nearly all the public two-year colleges in California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Texas, Washington, West Virginia, along with a selection of colleges from five other states. Transfer outcomes for colleges participating in the CSCC Transfer Assembly are reproduced below:

Entrants With No Prior College Experience
1988 (TA 94) 395 colleges N=522,758
1989 (TA 95) 416 colleges N=511,996
1990 (TA 96) 416 colleges N=543,055

Entrants Receiving 12+ Credits Within Four Years
1988 237,754 45.5%
1989 225,928 44.1%
1990 255,811 47.1%

Transfers to In-State, Public Universities Within Four Years
1988 57,769 22.1%
1989 54,185 21.5%
1990 62,803 21.8%

In summary, almost half of the entrants with no prior college experience complete at least 12 semester units (four courses) at the college, and of those more than one-fifth transfer. This rate has stayed remarkably stable since the study began in 1984.

Transfer data from 1984 to 1987 were reported in Cohen, Arthur M. "Analyzing Community College Student Transfer Rates." In A. M. Cohen (ed.) "Relating Curriculum and Transfer." New Directions for Community Colleges, no. 86. San Francisco, CA, 1994. Transfer data from 1988 and 1989 were calculated in December 1995, and data from 1990 were calculated in September 1996.
