Just four major subject areas account for almost 80% of the community college non-liberal arts course offerings, according to a spring 1991 study conducted by the Center for the Study of Community Colleges. Business and office courses were the largest category, followed by personal skills courses (largely physical education), trade and industry courses, and technical education courses (which includes courses in computer software). Other courses considered non-liberal arts include: technical agriculture, marketing and distribution, health, home economics, engineering technology, and education.
Non-liberal arts courses make up 43.4% of the total community college credit curriculum.
The following represents a sample of the findings:
| Research Universities | Comprehensive State Universities | |
| California (n=30) | 28.9% | 61.7% |
| Illinois (n=3) | 15.9% | 80.4% |
| Texas (n=11) | 35.5% | 41.6% |
