On average, full-time community college faculty earn 27% less than faculty at doctoral granting institutions, 13% less than faculty at compehensive four-year institutions, and about the same as faculty at baccalaureate institutions. However, these figures vary dramatically when examined by state, faculty rank, or type of institution.

California has the highest average salary for public two-year institutions at $50,368. In the other eight states where community college faculty earn above$43,000 per year, two-year and public four-year salaries differ by as much as 35%.

The states with the widest discrepancy between public two and four year faculty salaries are: North Carolina, where two year faculty earn 48% less than public four-year institution faculty ($27,454 vs. $52,389); Nebraska where two-year faculty earn 41% less ($30,879 vs.$52,303); and South Carolina, 40% ($28,085 vs. $47,035).

The widest variance in faculty salaries is in the professor rank; community college full professors earn 28% less than full professors at doctoral-granting institutions; 12% less than full professors at all comprehensive four-year institutions; and 1% less than faculty at baccalaureate institutions.

Faculty at private, independant four-year colleges earn more than faculty at public institutions of the same type, whether these are comprehensive, baccalaureate-degree granting, or doctoral institutions. Among two-year colleges, faculty at public institutions earn more than those at private, independent colleges, and signifigantly more than faculty at church-related two-year colleges.
