The total undergraduate headcount enrollment in community colleges for Fall 1997 was 5,420,263. Part-time students accounted for 63.3 percent of the enrollment and females accounted for 57.9 percent. Tuition and fees average about half those at public four-year institutions and about one-tenth those at independent four-year institutions. The ten states with the largest community college student enrollment (Fall 1996), along with the percentage of the adult population enrolled (Fall 1996) and respective tuition and fees (1997-98), are as follows:
